Nineteen
19 places, 19 paintings
An artist book about place, visual memory and belonging.
NINETEEN brings together nineteen paintings inspired by familiar Hungarian landscapes, buildings and landmarks. Through a reduced visual language, each place is distilled into a few essential forms — a silhouette, a line, a characteristic shape. These elements evoke recognition while leaving space for personal associations and memories.
Drawing on the artist’s background in graphic design, the series approaches landscape as a visual sign. Its distinctive material surfaces incorporate natural clay collected in northern Hungary, connecting the depicted places to the physical substance of the surrounding land. Reclaimed supports and salvaged wood further extend the relationship between material, memory and place.
The book brings together two forms of cultural memory: the visual language of the paintings and excerpts from Hungarian literature associated with the places depicted. Nineteen images and nineteen literary voices form parallel narratives of landscape, history and belonging.
The title carries a meaning of its own. The series consists of nineteen paintings — one short of twenty. This deliberate absence leaves the work open, inviting the viewer to complete the journey through personal experience and interpretation.
